Cycling for everyone

Always wanted to ride a bike but don’t know how? Camden Cycle Skills teaches essential bike riding skills for all ages and abilities, from beginner and intermediate group courses to individual training on busy roads.

Free cycle training is available for anyone who lives, works or studies in Camden.

Training sessions are booked one at a time. Participants who have completed a course and would like more training can ask their instructors for advice on registering for further sessions.

Let us know during the registration process if you do not have, or cannot bring your own bike. We can provide training bikes. We recommend that trainees bring their own helmet if they wish to wear one. All training takes place outdoors.

All training follows the government Bikeability syllabus and all instructors are National Standards qualified, have received First Aid training, and hold current DBS Certificates as required for working with young or vulnerable people.

Children's cycle skills

We offer 3 levels of free cycle training to suit your family’s needs.

Camden cycle skills training is also offered to children during the school day, through a national training programme called Bikeability

Level 1: Learn to Cycle course

This course is for children who are learning to balance on a bike, how to start pedalling and how to stop. We prioritise children aged 8 (school year 3) and above.

This course teaches the basic skills of how to ride and have fun while learning. Training is held in the safe playground area of Haverstock School (NW3), near Chalk Farm Underground Station.

Some training bikes are available to borrow, but if you can, bring your child's own well-fitting, roadworthy bike.

Courses consist of two 45-minute sessions on consecutive days on selected days in the school holidays.

If we do not receive enough bookings before the course date, we may contact you to book an alternative session.

Some training bikes are available to borrow, but if you can, bring your child's own well-fitting, roadworthy bike.

Level 3: Family Urban Road Cycle Skills

This course is aimed at children, parents, and guardians. It teaches children to cycle safely on quiet roads and teaches you to lead your child safely through traffic.

This training is delivered in family groups by a personal cycling instructor who will tailor the course and the location of the training to your individual needs. For instance, your route from home to school or the local leisure centre could be included.

Your child will need good bike control skills, including signalling, stopping quickly and observation. We recommend that children practice these skills first at our child building cycle confidence group courses.

Training will begin away from traffic, moving onto quiet roads and busier situations as appropriate. Sessions last between 1.5 and 2 hours. All participants must have their own, well-fitting and roadworthy bikes.

During registration, you can request a preferred training date. Our instructor will contact you to arrange your cycle skills session individually.

Bikeability at schools

Primary schools can arrange for pupils in year 5 or 6 to learn to cycle on quiet roads around the school. Younger pupils are taught bike control skills within the school grounds. Pupils in early year groups can take part in scooter training and pedestrian skills sessions.

Cycle training usually takes place over 4-5 consecutive days for a few hours in the morning or afternoon.

Contact your school to find out whether this will be available to your child. If not, please ask them to arrange the training—it's free for them.

Schools looking for further information on Bikeability can email Camden's Cycle Training Officer.  We are keen to offer this cycle training in as many schools as possible.
